The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that 1,038,206 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in May, a 3.9-percent increase from May 2016. May passenger boardings were up 4.0 percent, with a total of 530,826. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 4,518,776, up 5.4 percent. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 2,269,491 up 5.5 percent.
“May's traffic increase outpaced our airline's seat capacity growth from last year, meaning planes at KCI are fuller than before," said Kansas City Director of Aviation Pat Klein. "Additionally the size of aircraft at KCI continues to increase, with 129 seats per departure at KCI last month.”
Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were up 2.0 percent in May with a total of 16.9 million pounds handled. Year to date, 83.2 million pounds have been handled, down 1.6 percent. Air freight handled at KCI during May amounted to 16.1 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year decrease of 1.0 percent. Year to date, air freight is down 3.5 percent with a total of 79.6 million pounds handled. Air mail for May was up 131.2 percent from May 2016 with 832,145 pounds handled. Air mail is up 75.6 percent year to date with 3.7 million pounds handled.
The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for May 2017 was 171. Service was offered to 47 nonstop markets. There was an average of 40,897 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 6 daily departures for May.
The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and is supported wholly by airport user charges.
